H-type or A-type layer cages: how to choose

Density, house type, climate, budget and expansion plans — five questions that decide which cage system fits your farm.

1. How many birds per square metre do you need? H-type stacks 4–8 tiers and reaches 3–4× the density of A-type.

2. Is the house open-sided or closed? A-type works in open houses with natural ventilation; H-type needs a closed house with tunnel ventilation.

3. Climate. Hot, humid regions with unreliable power favour A-type in open houses. Where power is stable, closed H-type houses give better control.

4. Budget. A-type costs roughly 40–50% less per bird in equipment, but needs more land and building per bird.

5. Expansion. If you plan to automate later, choose cages pre-fitted for egg belts and manure belts.
